Frequently asked questions

How do I create a route?

In the “Routes” tab, tap the plus at the top right and give the route a name. Use “Add stop” to search for your destinations. You can change the order by dragging under “Edit”.

Where does a route start and where does it end?

The first stop is the start, the last one is the destination – both are labelled in the list. Everything in between is an intermediate stop. Under “Edit” you can move any entry, including the start and the destination.

If you usually set off from the same place, set a “Home” in the settings. One tap then adds it as the start of any route.

How do I drive a route?

Open the route and tap Apple Maps or Google Maps under “Navigation”. The stops are handed over to the app you chose. You decide in the settings which one is listed first.

The maps app starts at the start of the route. If you would rather set off from where you are right now, set “Start from” to “Current location” for that route – the journey to the start is then added to the kilometres shown.

How is the distance calculated?

Road4Trip calculates the real driving distance using Apple’s routing service – the kilometres you actually cover on the road, not the straight-line distance.

The app needs an internet connection briefly for this.

Why does a route show “approx.” before the kilometres?

Then the route could not be calculated yet, usually because there was no connection. Instead the app shows the straight-line distance, which is shorter than the real route.

Open the route again with an internet connection and the exact value is filled in.

What does choosing the mode of transport do?

It determines how the calculation works. Car, motorcycle and scooter use the same roads and give the same route.

Bicycle and on foot follow different paths and therefore give a different distance and a completely different time.

How does a trip get into the history?

Open the route and tap “Mark as completed”. It then appears with its date in the “History” tab, together with the statistics across all trips.

How do I get the widget?

Press and hold an empty spot on the home screen, then choose “Edit Home Screen” and tap the plus at the top. Search for “Road4Trip” and add the size you want.

The widget shows your next planned trip with date, mode of transport and kilometres. There is one for the lock screen as well – press and hold the lock screen, choose “Customise” and tap the area below the clock.

For anything to appear, a route needs a date. Switch on “Trip planned” in the route.

How do I back up my routes?

In the settings under “Backup”. There you can switch on “Back up automatically” – daily, weekly or monthly – and “Back up now” does it by hand at any time. A switch decides whether the photos are included.

The last five backups are kept. They are stored in your iCloud Drive in the “Road4Trip” folder and can be reached through the Files app. That way they survive even a lost iPhone.

“Restore backup” replaces all routes on the iPhone with the backup you choose. This cannot be undone, which is why the app asks first.

Where are my routes stored?

On this iPhone and in your own iCloud. There is no user account, and Road4Trip sends nothing to a server run by the developer.

If you are signed in to iCloud, your routes sync between your devices. Backups sit in the “Road4Trip” folder in your iCloud Drive. If you share a trip, the people you invite see exactly that one trip.

All of it stays in your Apple Account. The developer of Road4Trip has no access to it.

Can I share routes with friends?

Yes. Open the route and tap “Plan with others”. You then invite people as usual via Messages, Mail or a link.

Whoever accepts finds the trip under “Shared with me” in the route list. Everyone invited can suggest stops and vote on the suggestions.

Both of you need to be signed in to iCloud.

What happens when we vote on stops?

Everyone has one vote per suggestion. Tapping a suggestion casts your vote, tapping again takes it back.

Suggestions are sorted by votes. Nothing is decided automatically – whoever created the trip still adds the stops themselves.

Do my routes appear on my other devices?

Yes, as long as you are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account everywhere. Routes, stops and your history sync on their own.

Photos stay on the device at first because they count towards your iCloud storage. You can turn them on under Settings → Sync with “Photos on all devices”.

The status is shown in the same place. If it says “Not signed in”, everything stays on this iPhone – the app keeps working fully, just on its own.

What can the app do on the Apple Watch?

It shows your planned trips with date and distance, marks a trip as driven and sends it to the iPhone to set off. There is also a complication for the watch face.

Navigation deliberately does not happen on the watch: Maps there knows only a single destination – a route across several stops could not be handed over at all.

The trips reach the watch via iCloud. Without signing in it stays empty.

How do I get rid of all routes at once?

At the very bottom of the settings, via “Reset app”. This deletes all routes including the history and restores the original settings.

So that this cannot happen by accident, you have to type the word “Reset” to confirm. It cannot be undone.

I deleted the app – are my routes gone?

Not necessarily. If sync is on, your routes are in your iCloud and come back as soon as you reinstall the app and sign in.

Without sync they are gone – then only a backup from the “Road4Trip” folder in your iCloud Drive helps.
